Silk Care: How to Wash, Dry, and Preserve Your Pieces
Colette28 June 2026
Silk has a reputation for being a delicate fabric. In reality, it is easy to care for—provided you follow a few rules. Properly washed, beautiful mulberry silk can last for years.
By hand or machine?
Both work. By hand: cold to lukewarm water (max 30 °C), gentle detergent, press without twisting. By machine: delicate/silk cycle at 30 °C, minimal spin, always inside a laundry bag to avoid friction and snags.
The right detergent
A gentle, pH-neutral detergent, specially made for silk or delicate fabrics. Avoid: bleach, whitening agents, fabric softeners, and harsh stain removers, which damage the fibers and dull the shine.
Color test: on dark or bright silk, test on a discreet area before the first full wash.
Drying and ironing
Never use a tumble dryer. Press the item in a towel to remove excess water, then dry flat, away from direct sunlight (sunlight fades colors). If ironing is needed: use the “silk” setting (low temperature), on the reverse side, ideally on fabric that is still slightly damp.
Stains and everyday care
Act quickly with cold water, blotting without rubbing. For daily care, air out your items and wash them sparingly: silk naturally resists odors and dust mites.
Storing silk
Folded, in a dry place away from light. Avoid thin hangers that leave marks, and prolonged contact with perfumes or alcohol-based products.
In a nutshell
30 °C, laundry bag, gentle detergent, no tumble dryer, dry flat in the shade. That’s all you need to remember.
