The quick guide

Understanding momme

16.5, 19, 22, 25 or 30: behind these numbers lies the density of the silk — and with it, its feel, its body and its lifespan. Here is how to read a grade and choose yours.

Definition

Momme (mm) is the unit of weight for silk: 1 momme = 4.3056 g/m². The higher the number, the denser the weave: the silk is thicker, more opaque and more durable — and more expensive, as it takes more thread.

The grades, side by side

All our grades are 6A mulberry silk, woven as silk satin (charmeuse): only the density changes.

How to choose your grade

For sleeping: 19 or 22

A 19 momme pillowcase is enough to feel the difference on skin and hair; at 22 momme, it gains in density, body and lustre, wash after wash.

For a bedding set: 22 or 25

Duvet cover and fitted sheet work hard all night long: from 22 momme upwards, the weave withstands weekly washing without losing its feel.

For gifting or for keeps: 25 to 30

The densest silk in our collection: heavy, enveloping, opaque. The grade for pieces you keep for years.

For wearing: 16.5 to 19

Pyjamas, nightdresses and scarves call for fluidity: the lighter grades drape better and breathe more freely.

Care

Keeping the lustre, whatever the grade

Wash at 30 °C on a delicate cycle, with a detergent free from enzymes and optical brighteners. No fabric softener, no tumble dryer: silk dries flat or on a hanger, out of direct sunlight. A gentle iron on the reverse, while still slightly damp, is enough to restore the sheen.

The higher the grade, the better the silk tolerates frequent washing: a 22 momme pillowcase can be washed every week for years.

Frequently Asked Questions

Momme or thread count?

Thread count applies to cotton. For silk, momme is what counts: it measures the weight of the fabric, and therefore its true density.

Is 30 momme silk warmer?

Being denser, it is more enveloping, but silk remains thermoregulating: it wicks away moisture and keeps the skin dry, in winter as in summer. The difference is felt above all in the weight and the structure.

Which grade for hair and skin?

From 19 momme, the smooth surface limits friction. At 22 momme, the pillowcase keeps its smoothness for longer and withstands weekly washing: it is our recommendation for the beauty ritual.

What does ‘6A silk’ mean?

The letter and number indicate the quality of the raw silk thread: 6A is the highest grade (long, even fibres, free of knots). The momme then indicates the density of the weave made with that thread.

Still unsure?

Three questions are all it takes to find your grade and the pieces that suit you.
